ID-10078052(1)Polypropylene is the leading raw material globally used for manufacturing nonwoven fabrics. Spunbonded polypropylene nonwoven fabrics accounted for 47.4% of the total volume of the nonwovens market in 2013 because of their use in diapers, feminine care and medical products. The global market for polypropylene nonwoven fabrics is expected to be $1,865 billion by 2020 with an estimated annual growth rate of 7% from 2014 to 2020.

Why is propylene so popular in the nonwovens market? Its popularity is due mostly to the many different advantages and chemical properties of this very flexible plastic.

  • Low cost. Overall, polypropylene can be purchased in bulk for a relatively low cost.
  • Moderate strength and stability.
  • Flexibility. This makes it easier to mold into a variety of shapes.
  • Lightweight.
  • Colorfast. Colors will remain bright and it can be colored without degrading the plastic quality.
  • It doesn’t mold or deteriorate in the presence of bacteria, mold or other elements.
  • Insulation properties.
  • Chemically resistant to many oils and solvents.
  • Excellent moisture resistance.
  • High temperature resistance.

It’s important to choose the right raw material for your end-use product. Polypropylene offers many excellent characteristics that are often the perfect choice for nonwoven fabrics. You should consult with your nonwoven manufacturing partner to determine the right raw material for your nonwoven fabric product.
