Some manufacturers go above and beyond to receive ISO 9001 certification for their manufacturing processes. But what IS ISO 9001 and why does it matter?

What is ISO 9001 Certification?

ID-100124252ISO 9001 is an internationally recognized standard for the quality management of businesses. It means that a business has a series of defined processes that create and control the products it produces. It also means that a company has been audited and certified by an outside party for performance and effectiveness of those procedures.

Is ISO 9001 Certification easy to obtain?

In a nutshell: no. ISO 9001 certification takes commitment from the entire company from management to equipment operators. It requires an examination of current processes and an understanding of the required standard processes for certification. Companies often have to develop new processes, procedures, quality controls and documents in order to fulfill the standard requirements. Then, after the business itself has reviewed and revised all of its procedures, it has to ask the certifying body to review. After final certification, the company must ensure that it continues to uphold the standards moving forward and submit to re-certification every three years.

Why does ISO 9001 certification matter?

There are a variety of reasons why customers should look for nonwoven manufacturers who hold an ISO 9001 certification, including:

  • Business processes are more effective. Any business that takes the time to examine internal processes, implement new procedures to adhere to a specific international standard and then have those processes reviewed has a firm understanding of what it takes to run a business effectively.

  • Customer satisfaction is increased.  A natural byproduct of increased efficiencies in business processes is increased customer satisfaction and retention. Why? Because the company you are doing business with is focused on reducing waste and increasing productivity.
  • Quality matters.  The bottom line is that every business and every customer benefits when quality standards are implemented.

Partnering with a company with an internationally recognized ISO 9001 certification is smart business. Some businesses even require that their manufactures hold the ISO certification. Are your nonwoven manufacturing partners ISO certified?
